An Introduction to the Literature of the Old Testament

An Introduction to the Literature of the Old Testament
English | PDF | 105.38 MB

From the Preface: The aim of the present volume is to furnish an account, at once descriptive and historical, of the Literature of the Old Testament. It is not, I ought perhaps to explain, an Introduction to the Theology, or to the History, or even to the Study, of the Old Testament: in any of these cases, the treatment and contents would both have been very different.

It is an Introduction to the Literature of the Old Testament; and what I conceived this to include was an account of the contents and structure of the several books, together with such an indication of their general character and aim as I could find room for in the space at my disposal. The treatment of the material has been determined by the character of the different books. The contents of the prophetical and poetical books, for instance, which are less generally known than the history, properly so called, have been stated more fully than those of the historical books: the legislative parts of the Pentateuch have also been described with tolerable fulness. A comparative study of the writings of the Old Testament is indispensable, if their relation to one another is to be rightly apprehended: accordingly the literary and other characteristics which connect, or distinguish, as the case may be, particular groups of writings have been indicated with some care.

The Cambridge Introduction to Creative Writing

The Cambridge Introduction to Creative Writing
2007 | 290 Pages | ISBN: 0521547547 , 0521838800 | PDF | 3 MB

This pioneering book introduces students to the practice and art of creative writing and creative reading. It offers a fresh, distinctive and beautifully written synthesis of the discipline. David Morley discusses where creative writing comes from, the various forms and camouflages it has taken, and why we teach and learn the arts of fiction, poetry and creative nonfiction. He looks at creative writing in performance; as public art, as visual art, as e-literature and as an act of community. As a leading poet, critic and award-winning teacher of the subject, Morley finds new engagements for creative writing in the creative academy and within science. Accessible, entertaining and groundbreaking, The Cambridge Introduction to Creative Writing is not only a useful textbook for students and teachers of writing, but also an inspiring read in its own right. Aspiring authors and teachers of writing will find much to discover and enjoy.

Introduction to Nanoscience

Stuart Lindsay, "Introduction to Nanoscience"
English | 2009-12-20 | ISBN: 0199544212 | 448 pages | PDF | 5,2 MB

Nanoscience is not physics, chemistry, engineering or biology. It is all of them, and it is time for a text that integrates the disciplines. This is such a text, aimed at advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students in the sciences. The consequences of smallness and quantum behaviour are well known and described Richard Feynman's visionary essay 'There's Plenty of Room at the Bottom' (which is reproduced in this book). Another, critical, but thus far neglected, aspect of nanoscience is the complexity of nanostructures.

Hundreds, thousands or hundreds of thousands of atoms make up systems that are complex enough to show what is fashionably called 'emergent behaviour'. Quite new phenomena arise from rare configurations of the system. Examples are the Kramer's theory of reactions (Chapter 3), the Marcus theory of electron transfer (Chapter 8), and enzyme catalysis, molecular motors, and fluctuations in gene expression and splicing, all covered in the final Chapter on Nanobiology. The book is divided into three parts. Part I (The Basics) is a self-contained introduction to quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics and chemical kinetics, calling on no more than basic college calculus. A conceptual approach and an array of examples and conceptual problems will allow even those without the mathematical tools to grasp much of what is important. Part II (The Tools) covers microscopy, single molecule manipulation and measurement, nanofabrication and self-assembly. Part III (Applications) covers electrons in nanostructures, molecular electronics, nano-materials and nanobiology. Each chapter starts with a survey of the required basics, but ends by making contact with current research literature.

Intertemporal Resource Economics: An Introduction to the Overlapping Generations Approach ( Netload - Rapidgator )

Intertemporal Resource Economics: An Introduction to the Overlapping Generations Approach

Karl Farmer, Birgit Bednar-Friedl, "Intertemporal Resource Economics: An Introduction to the Overlapping Generations Approach"
S.p..rin.ge.r | English | 2010-08-03 | ISBN: 3642132286 | 184 pages | PDF | 6.8 mb

This monograph provides a concise introduction to the overlapping generations approach to the intertemporal economics of renewable natural resources. In contrast to the dominant infinitely-lived agent (ILA) approach it acknowledges that natural resources typically outlive the individuals who use them. Finite lifetimes, generations overlap and competing natural and man-made capital facilitate long-run intergenerational inefficiency and inequity (unsustainability) of market allocations. While avoiding any presumption of either doomsday or a golden age, the book investigates the structural and institutional preconditions needed to ensure that renewable resources are used efficiently and equitably across generations. The primary aim of this book is to provide an easy-to-follow guide to the analytically much more demanding journal literature. This is achieved by using the same model type throughout the book and by adhering to functional specifications that allow for explicit equilibrium solutions.
